As we complete the academic year, we say good-bye to some of our students, recent graduates, and fellows, several of whom are moving on to other universities or have found strong career positions and full-time employment. At the MLC, we help students and scholars realize their dreams.
Sally Butterfield who assisted the MLC archives and records management, has accepted a full-time position at the Presbyterian Church of Canada Archives, starting in June. The Presbyterian Church Archives hold over 3,500 square feet of textual records and over 20,000 photographs, and Sally is ready to delve into these treasures using the skills acquired during her studies and experiential learning in the MLC archives.
Sydney Dale-McGrath who has been a tireless researcher on the MLC’s World War I and Modernism research team, accepted a full-time position as an academic administrative assistant at Sunnybrook Hospital, where she starts on June 1. Sunnybrook Hospital, a leading institution that includes an academic health sciences centre and advances medical research through the Sunnybrook Research Institute, is an excellent match for Sydney, whose research skills are exceptional. Sydney looks forward to staying connected to the MLC.
Dr. Alma Mikulinsky, MLC Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow (2013-2014), secured a coveted tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History in the History Department at Duquesne University. She will begin her new position in January 2015.
Chelsea Olsen has just completed her MRP in the Communications and Culture MA Program under Dr. Gammel’s supervision. She has been accepted into the PhD program in the English Department at the University of Sussex (2014-2018), where she plans to specialize in studies of Modernism and gender. She has also been awarded a major international scholarship by Sussex University.
Catherine (Katie) Russell as the MLC Research Coordinator for the past two years, has helped shepherd each and every team member through his or her orientation and training at the centre. She has championed a variety of projects and provided dedicated research and research administration support to Dr. Gammel and team members at all levels. In particular, Catherine helped with the implementation of the MLC CFI grant. Passionate about art history and artistic practice, Catherine is grateful for the MLC’s support in her own career-building, as she notes: "I will be very sad to leave.” We will miss you, Catherine. Catherine’s new endeavors include working as a Fine Art Sales Associate at Navillus Gallery with Sullivan Entertainment, as well as with the Canadian Art Foundation.
Sydney Tyber, who is working on her MRP in the Literatures of Modernity Program, under Dr. Gammel’s supervision, has been accepted into the PhD program in the English Department at York University. She has also been awarded an OGS. Sydney is delighted with the support from the MLC and hopes to spend the summer working on translating some of her research into publications.
Nick Vani, a student in Arts and Contemporary Studies (ACS) with focus on History, and MLC Team Member working on the Modernism and WWI Project, has been accepted into the MA program in History at Queen’s University. He will be working with the supervisor of choice, Dr. Ian McKay, who is well known for his work in Canadian cultural history. In Nick’s own words, the prospect of working with Dr. McKay "is extremely exciting!” As Nick writes about his time at the MLC: "I have truly learned a lot by working on the Hamilton [and World War I] project. I believe my time here has helped me fulfill my dream of going to graduate school, and has prepared me to be successful once I get there. Thank you so very much for everything.”
