The theme of the 2017 Society for Socialist Studies (SSS) Conference is Liberation Here and Now: Continuity and Change in Socialist Studies at 50 Years and Beyond. We call upon participants to fundamentally trouble Project Canada, to celebrate past and future resistances and solidarities, and to engage in dialogue on how to get to a decolonized praxis and collective liberation here and now. As part of this dialogue, we remain open as always to sessions, papers, and roundtables on the full range of socialist inquiry. We note here other important anniversaries in 2017, such as 150 years of the publication of Marx’s Capital and 100 years since women’s enfranchisement in Canada. This conference is also an important opportunity to reflect on the Society for Socialist Studies at its 50thanniversary. How has Socialist Studies helped us know and change the world? And what conversations and transformations need to happen in the next 50 years? Deadline for submission: January 31, 2017. Submission Link: https://conferences.uvic.ca/index.php/sss/sss2017/index
Women's and Gender Studies et Recherches Féministes (WGSRF) calls for papers complicates utopian constructions of unlimited national growth and opportunity with mindful attention to increasingly precarious academic and social futures, as they reflect the interests and needs of a wide range of communities with and for whom knowledge production takes place in sometimes less than welcoming environments. Theme 1: Papers that address precarious futures leading to migration, movement and border crossings of all kinds are also invited. How might precarious citizenship status be included as a critical focus in conversations about futurity? Theme 2: Submissions are invited that interrogate how feminist social justice scholarship survives and is conducted in environments that may be hostile or difficult. Theme 3: Open Call: We also welcome proposals outside of the above two themes that explore knowledges emerging through and complicating knowledge production in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies in all of its diverse articulations. This year, a 4-session subconference on Fat Studies has been proposed by Professors Deborah McPhail (Deborah.McPhail@umanitoba.ca) and May Friedman (May.Friedman@ryerson.ca). Please contact them directly if you wish to make a submission germane to that specific subtheme. Panel sessions and workshops are typically scheduled to be 75 minutes in length, and papers are expected to be approximately 8 - 9 double-spaced pages, or 15 - 20 minutes, for individual submissions. If you are proposing a workshop, please indicate expected time frame if different from typical scheduling. All proposals will be anonymously reviewed. Deadline for submission: December 16, 2016. Send proposals by email only, in Word or RTF, to: WGSRF.Conference.2017@gmail.com.
